What you can do about Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a very frequent passage of stools that are soft and watery. It can be followed with cramps, the pressure in the stomach and abdominal bloating. This is the most common illness that affects all age groups, and it can be compared only to the common cold.

Some useful information about diarrhea

Diarrhea is also a symptom of many severe illnesses. Most severe form of diarrhea is chronic diarrhea (diarrhea that lasts over two weeks).

Diarrhea causes

There are a plethora of things that can cause diarrhea and they range from viruses to alcohol abuse. When it comes to viral infections that cause diarrhea, we can sort them in three virus groups: rotavirus (virus that causes diarrhea in infants), norovirus (viruses that are responsible for diarrhea epidemics among children and adults) and adenovirus (that causes diarrhea to all age groups).

Bacterial infections are, most commonly, caused by food poisoning and they are responsible for serious cases of diarrhea. One of the most severe types of diarrhea caused by bacterial infections is a so-called explosive diarrhea which is the forceful expulsion of stool. Bacterial infections that lead to diarrhea can also be contracted through foreign travel where we are met with bacteria our immune system had not met before.Parasites can also cause diarrhea and they are contracted through contaminated water. Most common diarrhea contracting parasites are Giardia Lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica.
Different reactions to some medications like antibiotics, cancer drugs, and antacids as well as intolerance to certain foods such as artificial sweeteners can also lead to diarrhea.Abuse of either alcohol or laxative will cause diarrhea. In the case of alcohol abuse, both chronic alcoholism and binge drinking may cause it and in the case of laxative abuse, frequent usage of the laxative will always cause diarrhea (you can also self-cause diarrhea by taking a lot of laxative at once).

Symptoms of diarrhea

Most common and most obvious symptom of diarrhea is watery and liquid stool. The severity of the diarrhea may be determined by its color. If the color of the stool is red, then it means that there is some form of intestinal bleeding at the work. If the stool is black then it means that there is a bleeding in upper portions of the intestine or in the stomach.

Abdominal cramps that include abdominal pain are also a symptom of diarrhea. In the majority of the cases the pain is mild or moderate, but in some rare cases the pain is severe and that suggests some severe disease in the digestive system.

High fewer as a diarrhea symptom is rare and it suggests other severe illness.

Diarrhea treatment

Diarrhea is treated differently depending on the patient, whether they are children or adults. Adults should drink a lot of water, eat foods that are not greasy or fatty and they should avoid any form of exercise.Children that have diarrhea should stay at home and they should drink a lot of water. Infants should be fed with Pedialyte and a diet that contains bananas, toast and rice.
